Crystal Mikes, MEd, NCC
Career Consultant & Cofounder
Crystal began her career as a journalist. She spent five years covering stories in small towns. But with the high demands of the newspaper industry, Crystal decided to explore other career options. She vividly recalls sitting in her first career development class in graduate school in 2012, where she felt a deep sense of purpose. Her passion for career development was ignited. After graduating with her degree in career development, she landed her “dream job” as a career counselor at the University of Colorado Boulder. This is where Crystal and Erin first met and worked together. Emboldened by the mission of helping students thrive in their careers, Crystal threw herself into the work with dedication and determination.
After Crystal got married, and then became a mother in 2018, priorities shifted. While she cherished her career, her family became her primary focus. The pandemic further highlighted the importance of balancing work and family, ultimately leading her to prioritize her role as a mother above all else. She now has two sons who are 5 and 3. She continues to work full-time, but she feels strongly that her main responsibility and intrinsic fulfillment is at home. Crystal continuously seeks to strike a balance between work and family, connecting with other moms attempting to do the same.
Inspired by her own experiences of work and motherhood, when Erin approached Crystal with the idea of providing career coaching for moms through MomWorks, Crystal jumped at the opportunity. The focus on career development and motherhood marries two of Crystal’s passions, and it created another feeling of deep purpose. Her hope is to empower other mothers to pursue their professional goals and find their own sense of self while prioritizing their families. With 12+ years of experience in the field of career development and 5+ years as a mom, clients can expect a welcoming, accepting, professional environment while working with Crystal. She will partner with you as you refine your career path and help you navigate your next career step.
Crystal earned her Bachelor of Science in Journalism in 2007 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and her Master of Education in Human Resources and Education with an emphasis on Counseling and Career Development in 2014 from Colorado State University. She also is a nationally certified career counselor.

Erin Penberthy, MA
Career Consultant & Cofounder
Erin’s experience with career coaching began as a junior in college when she landed a peer mentoring role at the University's Career Services office. She was immediately drawn to the work of helping others explore and find careers. A decade later, Erin’s professional experience spans not only career coaching but also recruiting, employer relations, and people management. These experiences are garnered from her tenure in both high-growth, tech startups and higher education, which has allowed Erin to coach and collaborate with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. This work has contributed to Erin’s knowledge of the career exploration/job search processes and her skills as a solutions-focused, empathic, and engaging career practitioner.
In April 2020, Erin’s entry into motherhood collided with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting her to rethink her professional trajectory and find work that allowed her more time at home. Through conversations with fellow moms, observing her mother’s meaningful career, and in her own experience raising two daughters (ages 4 and 1) while seeking a professional identity, Erin resonates with the challenges moms face as they try to balance it all. For years, she contemplated creating a private practice, but it was not until her roles as a career counselor and mother converged that she began to seriously consider a business venture. A pivotal moment occurred during an informational interview with a woman seeking to re-enter the workforce, reinforcing to Erin that her passion lay in supporting moms in their career pursuits. This laid the groundwork for what would later become MomWorks.
Erin and Crystal (friends and former colleagues) teamed up combining their years of career coaching expertise to create a shared vision of a private career consulting business centered around empowering moms. As a thought-partner to her clients, Erin is passionate about serving fellow moms as they navigate the nuances of being present with their families while also exploring career identities and reaching their professional goals.
Erin earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2014 from the University of Colorado Boulder and her Masters of Arts in Education and Human Development from the University of Colorado Denver in 2018.
